The Distinction Between Granite And Marble

The difference between marble and granite

1、 According to stone origin:

(1). Marble

Marble belongs to metamorphic rock

Metamorphic rock is a kind of rock that is naturally metamorphosed from one stone to another under the mixed action of high temperature, high pressure and minerals. Qualitative change may be recrystallization, texture change or color change.

Natural marble is a metamorphic rock formed by the original rock in the crust under the action of high temperature and high pressure in the crust. It belongs to medium hard stone, which is mainly composed of calcite, limestone, serpentine and dolomite. It usually has obvious patterns and many mineral particles.

(2). Granite

Granite belongs to igneous rock

Igneous rocks are mainly formed from volcanic materials, such as magma. The liquid magma under the surface cools and solidifies. Minerals, gases and liquids seep into rocks to form new crystals and colors.

Generally dark color. Natural granite is igneous rock, also known as acid crystalline plutonic rock. It is a kind of rock widely distributed in igneous rock. It is hard and dense. It can be divided into "pegmatite", "coarse crystal" and "fine crystal" according to its crystal particle size.

2、 Difference by hardness:

The hardness of stone is calculated by Mohs hardness. Mohs hardness in 6-7 belongs to hard stone, such as granite. Mohs hardness in 3-5 belongs to medium hard stone, such as marble. Mohs hardness in 1-2 belongs to soft stone, such as limestone and dolomite.

(1).Marble: because marble generally contains impurities, and calcium carbonate is easily weathered and corroded by the action of carbon dioxide, carbide and water vapor in the atmosphere, so that the surface will lose luster soon. Therefore, a few stable and durable varieties with pure quality and less impurities, such as white marble and aiyeqing, can be used outdoors. Other varieties are not suitable for outdoor use, but generally only for indoor decoration. Mohs hardness is 3-5

(2)Granite: granite is harder than marble, so it is difficult to process, but it is resistant to acid, weathering and corrosion. It is not easy to be weathered and deteriorated, and the appearance color can be maintained for more than 100 years, so it is mostly used for wall foundation and exterior wall finishes. Due to its high hardness and wear resistance, granite is also commonly used in high-grade building decoration projects, such as the floor of the lobby. Mohs hardness is 6-7

3、 Chemical composition differentiation:

(1). Marble: it belongs to carbonate stone, and its main component is calcium carbonate, accounting for more than 50%. Others include magnesium carbonate, calcium oxide, manganese oxide and silicon dioxide. It usually has obvious patterns and many mineral particles. (alkaline)

(2). Granite: it is mainly composed of quartz, feldspar, amphibole, pyroxene, olivine and biotite. It belongs to silicate stone, and its composition is mainly silica, accounting for about 65% ~ 75%. (acid)

4、 Grain differentiation:

(1). Marble (alkaline): Dali stone has simple mineral composition and easy processing. Most of them have fine texture and good mirror effect, but the natural texture is very rich. Its disadvantage is that its texture is softer than granite, it is easy to be damaged when impacted by hard and heavy objects, and light colored stones are easy to be polluted. Try to choose a single color for paving marble. Because marble generally contains impurities, and calcium carbonate is easily weathered and corroded by the action of carbon dioxide, carbide and water vapor in the atmosphere, so that the surface will lose luster soon. Therefore, most marble varieties are not suitable for outdoor use, but generally only for indoor decoration.

The color temperature of marble color makes people feel warm and soft. Most of them have texture or pattern, but there are a few exceptions, with obvious crystalline particles, such as crystal white or rosin yellow.

(2). Granite stone (acid): Granite stone has no color stripes, only color speckle patterns. The patterns are characterized by fine and uniform grains, and are distributed with starry mica bright spots and glittering quartz crystals. The finer the mineral particles, the better, indicating that the structure is compact and solid. The color temperature of granite color makes people feel cold, hard and wear-resistant. Most of the surface patterns look like flowers, and the color tone is also bright. After polishing, the finish is higher than that of marble, and generally has no grain, with the characteristics of uniform distribution of crystal particles, but a few have flow patterns, such as magic red, etc. The rock is hard and dense, with high hardness, wear resistance, not easy to weathering and deterioration, and the appearance color can be maintained for more than a century. Therefore, it is commonly used in high-grade building decoration projects. In home decoration, it is more suitable for the ground and windowsill of outdoor balcony, courtyard and guest restaurant.

5、 Color:

(1). Marble: the main component of marble is calcium carbonate, but the color of marble is related to the minerals contained. The main component is calcium carbonate, which is white, copper is green or blue, cobalt is light red, manganese is rose red, iron is yellow, strontium is light blue, stone ink is black and gray black.

(2). Granite: the color of stone mainly depends on the mineral composition. Generally, if there are many quartz and feldspar, the color of stone is light. When other minerals are abundant, gray white series granite and gray series granite are formed.

Among various minerals, the variety of feldspar (divided into plagioclase and orthoclase) has a great impact on the color of granite. Generally, plagioclase makes the stone white and gray white, orthoclase makes the stone red, and the hue of red stone is also related to the potassium content of feldspar. When the main component is potassium, the granite is beautiful and bright red.

Quartz is mostly white or milky white in granite. The greater the transparency of quartz, the stronger the absorbance, the less reflected light, and the lower the gloss of stone. Sometimes quartz also has white, yellow, purple and other colors.

Black granite dominated by dark minerals is another category of granite. The high-quality products must be pure black or black with green, and have high gloss, such as Fengzhen black.

Biotite and Muscovite are harmful minerals to stone. The increase of mica content will make it difficult to polish the stone. During grinding, dull pits due to mica cleavage or pits due to mica peeling will be formed, which will reduce the beauty of the stone surface.

Generally speaking, granite has deep color, single mineral, high crystallinity, small particles and high gloss.
